Detoxing. It’s a hot-button topic right now. Go to your local grocery store or health store, and you’re certain to find detox products galore. There are pills you can take to detox. There are meal supplements and replacements available through healthy, organic beverages. There are even cookbooks and weight-loss programs built around the idea of detoxing.

But what is a detox? How does it work? Who is it for? Is it something you should do? And what is the best way to do it?

Quite simply, detoxing is a process that rids your body of harmful toxins. These toxins enter your body through items you intake, such as food, beverages, pills and other chemicals, as well as through other pollutants in the environment. A basic detox begins by eliminating the bad stuff you consume and increasing the good stuff. Start your detox by reducing the amount of white sugar you consume, as well as eliminating cigarettes and alcohol. The saying goes that you should eat the rainbow, meaning eat a variety of organic fruits and vegetables that are of all the colors of a rainbow. This will give you a wide variety of all the nutrients your body needs that you can’t get by eating processed foods.

So cleansing the body through a detox should also include relieving your mind of worry and stress.

How can you do this? First and foremost, you should exercise more. Doctors recommend that you get one hour of exercise every day, in some form. If you haven’t done this in a while, start slow by walking each day. Don’t jump right to lifting heavy weights or trying to run a marathon.

Exercise aids with losing weight, promoting good digestion and creating a calmer mind. But exercise is one of the most important elements in a detox because it makes you sweat, and sweat is one way your body rids itself of toxins.
